The Southwest Florida community of Lehigh Acres has undergone vast changes over the past few years. Going from a population of about 30,000 people in the year 2000 to almost 68,000 in 2006, real estate in Lehigh Acres was in high demand.
During the housing boom of 2005-06, the number of construction projects in Lehigh Acres swelled to the point where—according the New York Times— more homes were built over the last 4 years than had been in the past 50 years combined. In fact, 6,000 residential and commercial buildings were constructed in 2006, which was the peak of Lehigh Acres' construction activity.
Unfortunately, the housing boom was bound to go bust, which it did in 2007. Home sales stalled and foreclosures in Lehigh Acres became more common. Today, construction levels are nearly back to their more modest 2001 levels.
