Between 2004 and 2006, property values in Fort Myers soared by approximately 30%. Buyers felt the pressure to buy, and buy they did! The purchasing frenzy in Southwest Florida led to an increased demand for new construction homes, which resulted in a flurry of building activity in the Fort Myers area. Unfortunately, many people who bought properties during the housing boom received attractive subprime loans, which were given to people regardless of their ability to make the payments. When the loans' teaser interest rates disappeared, their monthly payments soared. The number of Fort Myers foreclosures has been rising exponentially ever since.
