Additional Information

The history of Fort Myers Beach goes back to the time of Indians, Spanish forts, and homesteaders. The homesteader credited with last staking his claim was in 1914. Leroy Lemoreaux staked a claim, farmed and fished from Estero.fort_myers_beach_homes for sale

At that time, the bridge that links the island to the mainland of Fort Myers did not exist.  In 1921 a wooden toll bridge was built, but it was built, but it was destroyed 5 years later in a hurricane.

In the late 1800, pirates were known to take ships along the shores. Black Island, is named for the pirate Black Augustus, who settled on the island and grew vegetables in exchange for coffee and other luxuries before his death. Rumor has it that at his dealth, he instructed his family where his buried treasure was and they recovered the bounty.

In the 1500s Ponce de Leon and Hernando de Soto were also rumored to have been here. It is a fabled area with a storied past and a bright future.
