Estero Homes
Over the past 10 years, nearly 14,000 homes have been constructed in Estero, and more than 20 planned communities have been developed, including The Cascades, Pelican Sound, and Lighthouse Bay. During the housing boom, there was high demand for new condos and houses in Estero, but between 2006 and 2008, construction activity slowed down considerably. The housing market here is expected to rebound with force, as Estero is considered to be the hot place to invest in homes and property.
The median price for all Estero homes and properties is about $280,000, with foreclosures priced in the low-$200s. There are gated and non-gated communities, condominium developments, and a nice selection of short sales and foreclosures available.
The Development of Estero
Estero, Florida is located just north of Bonita Springs and Naples, and south of the city of Fort Myers. Estero's central location is just part of the community's appeal. In addition to convenience, Estero is also highly regarded in terms of its beauty and its well-planned development.
The Estero Community Plan was created in 2001, with the following goal: "Estero’s growth will be planned as a village, establishing defined areas for tasteful shopping, service and entertainment, while protecting and encouraging residential neighborhoods that encourage a sense of belonging. Weaving the community together will be carefully crafted limitations on strip commercial uses, inappropriate signage and certain undesired commercial uses, while additional design guidelines will be established to ensure attractive landscaping, streetscaping, architectural standards, and unified access points.”
This mission has been very successful, with planners enforcing strict regulations for commercial development within the community. These rules have been implemented in order to maintain the aesthetics of the town and to reduce commercial development's effect on residents' quality of life.
About Estero, Florida
This picturesque community is home to a number of golf courses, museums, art galleries, nature trails, parks, and shops. There are numerous medical facilities in the area and new restaurants as well. Estero has a high snowbird population, but younger residents and their families are discovering this place as a wonderful up-and-coming area that is devoted to responsible growth and active community involvement.
Estero was originally a Caluses tribe settlement. Spanish explorers started visiting the area in the 1500s, and named Estero after the Spanish word for "estuary." The Caluses people died out in the 1700s from diseases brought to the region by explorers and pirates. Citrus and cattle farmers arrived in the 1800s, and in 1904, a religious group called the Koreshans settled in the community as well. This sect remained in small numbers until the early 1960s, when the last living members gave their land to the State of Florida. This land is now preserved as the Koreshan State Historic Site, and is a wonderful place to spend the day.
